About Mike Eruzione

Mike Eruzione is one of the most recognizable figures in American sports history. As captain of the 1980 United States Olympic hockey team, he scored the winning goal against the Soviet Union in the game that became known as the “Miracle on Ice.” More than four decades later, his story remains a powerful example of leadership, teamwork, preparation, and belief.

Career Highlights

A native of Winthrop, Massachusetts, Eruzione played four seasons at Boston University and captained the Terriers as a senior. BU won four ECAC championships during his career, and he graduated in 1977 as the third-leading scorer in program history. He then played professionally with the Toledo Goaldiggers of the International Hockey League before being named captain of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team.

In Lake Placid, a U.S. roster of college players and minor leaguers defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union, with Eruzione scoring the decisive third-period goal, then beat Finland to win the gold medal. He retired as a player after the Olympics, so the final goal of his competitive career was one of the most famous in American sports. In 1999, Sports Illustrated named the Miracle on Ice the top sports moment of the 20th century.

Broadcasting & Boston University

Eruzione went on to work as a television commentator, covering five Olympic tournaments, and in 2002 he and his 1980 teammates lit the Olympic cauldron at the Salt Lake City Winter Games. He was inducted into the Boston University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1983, the same year the 1980 team entered the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. Today he serves as Boston University’s Director of Special Outreach, meeting with alumni and supporters on behalf of Terrier Athletics.
