Malcolm Butler is a Super Bowl champion and former NFL cornerback whose journey from undrafted free agent to the author of one of the most memorable plays in Super Bowl history has made him an enduring figure in New England sports.
A native of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Butler took an unconventional path to the NFL, playing at Hinds Community College before continuing his collegiate career at the University of West Alabama.
After going undrafted in the 2014 NFL Draft, Butler signed with the New England Patriots and earned a place on the roster as a rookie. His first NFL season culminated on football’s biggest stage in Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks.
With Seattle at New England’s one-yard line and 20 seconds remaining, Butler intercepted Russell Wilson’s pass at the goal line, preserving the Patriots’ 28-24 victory. The play instantly became one of the most iconic moments in Super Bowl and Patriots history.
Butler went on to become a full-time starter for New England, earning Pro Bowl honors following the 2015 season and Second-Team All-Pro recognition in 2016. He was also part of the Patriots team that won Super Bowl LI.
After four seasons in New England, Butler joined the Tennessee Titans, where he played three seasons. He later returned to New England in 2022 before ultimately concluding his NFL playing career.
