NE Patriots Hall of Fame Quarterback
Steve Grogan is a New England Patriots Hall of Fame quarterback who spent his entire 16-season NFL career with the franchise. Known for his toughness, mobility and ability to play through injuries, Grogan helped lead the Patriots through several important stages of the team’s early history.
The Patriots selected Grogan out of Kansas State in the fifth round of the 1975 NFL Draft. He became the team’s starting quarterback during his rookie season and helped New England reach the playoffs in 1976 after an 11–3 regular season. Grogan also contributed to the 1978 team that won the franchise’s first outright division championship and established a then-NFL record for rushing yards in a season.
A dangerous runner as well as a passer, Grogan scored 12 rushing touchdowns in 1976, setting an NFL record for quarterbacks that stood for 35 years. He later helped the Patriots reach Super Bowl XX and came off the bench to throw the team’s only touchdown pass in the game. Grogan finished his career with 26,886 passing yards, 182 touchdown passes and 35 rushing touchdowns. He was named to the Patriots’ All-1970s, All-1980s and 35th Anniversary teams and was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 1995.
