Red Sox Hall of Famer
Rico Petrocelli is a Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer and one of the most accomplished infielders in franchise history. A two-time All-Star who spent his entire Major League career in Boston, Petrocelli played a central role in two of the Red Sox’s most memorable championship seasons.
Petrocelli became the team’s starting shortstop in 1965 and helped the Boston Red Sox capture the 1967 American League pennant during the celebrated “Impossible Dream” season. In 1969, he hit 40 home runs, becoming the first American League shortstop to reach that milestone. After moving to third base, he remained a key contributor and helped Boston return to the World Series in 1975. Petrocelli finished his 13-year career with 210 home runs and 773 RBIs.
Following his playing career, Petrocelli worked as a Red Sox broadcaster, managed in the minor leagues and served as an instructor within the organization. He has also authored books about his career and the 1967 Red Sox, preserving the stories of one of the most important eras in franchise history. He was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1997.
