Dwight Evans is one of the most complete and enduring players in Boston Red Sox history. Known for his powerful throwing arm, disciplined approach at the plate and remarkable consistency, Evans excelled as both an elite defensive right fielder and a productive middle-of-the-order hitter. Affectionately known as “Dewey,” he spent nearly his entire 20-season Major League career in Boston and remains closely identified with the Red Sox teams of the 1970s and 1980s.
Evans debuted with the Red Sox in 1972 and played in Boston through the 1990 season before completing his career with the Baltimore Orioles in 1991. He appeared in 2,606 major-league games and recorded 2,446 hits, 385 home runs, 1,384 RBI and 1,470 runs scored. Defensively, Evans possessed one of the strongest and most accurate outfield arms of his era.
Evans won eight Gold Glove Awards, was selected to three All-Star teams and received two Silver Slugger Awards. He also made one of the most memorable catches in World Series history during Game 6 of the 1975 Fall Classic, robbing Cincinnati’s Joe Morgan and completing a double play. After retiring as a player, Evans remained involved in baseball as a coach, instructor and organizational consultant. He served as a hitting coach with the Colorado Rockies and Red Sox and later worked in player development and as a special assignment consultant for Boston. He was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2000.
