Don Sweeney is the general manager of the Boston Bruins and a former NHL defenseman whose relationship with the organization spans more than four decades. His career encompasses professional playing experience, player development, scouting and executive leadership at the highest level of hockey.
Selected by Boston in the 1984 NHL Draft, Sweeney played 15 seasons with the Boston Bruins and appeared in more than 1,000 games for the franchise. A dependable defenseman and respected teammate, he helped the Bruins reach the Stanley Cup Final in 1988 and 1990 before completing his playing career with the Dallas Stars.
Sweeney returned to Boston in a player-development role and advanced through the organization before becoming general manager in 2015. Under his leadership, the Bruins have consistently reached the postseason, advanced to the 2019 Stanley Cup Final and recorded the best regular season in NHL history in 2022–23. He received the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award in 2019 and was selected as general manager of Canada’s 2026 Olympic men’s hockey team.
