Digit Murphy
Hockey Coach | Executive
Margaret “Digit” Murphy is an ice hockey coach, executive, and trailblazer in women’s sports. Currently president of the Metropolitan Riveters in the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF), Murphy has led teams in NCAA Division I, the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL), and the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL/PHF). She is a two-time Clarkson Cup-winning coach with the Boston Blades and was the inaugural head coach and president of the Toronto Six.
A former standout at Cornell University, Murphy captained the Big Red women’s ice hockey team and earned Ivy League Player of the Year honors. She was inducted into the Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame and recognized by the Rhode Island Hockey Hall of Fame for her contributions to the sport.
Murphy spent 18 seasons as head coach of the Brown Bears women’s ice hockey program, where she became the winningest coach in NCAA Division I women’s hockey history, finishing her collegiate coaching career with 318 victories. During her tenure, she guided Brown to six ECAC Hockey titles, five Ivy League titles, and mentored players who went on to become Olympians and All-Americans.
Beyond coaching, Murphy co-founded the Play It Forward Sports Foundation and United Women’s Sports, creating professional opportunities and leadership pathways for female athletes globally. Her career has also included international coaching roles, including leading China’s Kunlun Red Star WIH team and its national women’s teams. Her impact spans on-ice success, executive leadership, and the advancement of gender equity in sport.
