Briana Scurry is an American soccer legend and one of the most influential goalkeepers in the history of the sport. A Minnesota native and the youngest of nine children, Scurry developed her skills locally in her home state before attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst to play Division I soccer. Throughout her standout collegiate career, she recorded 37 shutouts in 65 starts, finishing with a record of 48-13-4 and a 0.56 goals-against-average.

Following her standout career at UMASS, Scurry became a founding player for the Atlanta Beat of the Women’s United Soccer Association, the world’s first women’s soccer league where players were paid as professionals. As one of the first African American professional female soccer players, she has helped pave the way for future generations. Throughout her professional career, she was a staple goalkeeper for the United States women’s national soccer team and won one World Cup and earned 2 gold medals. Scurry had 173 international appearances – the second most among all female soccer players. In 2017, Scurry was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame becoming the first woman goalkeeper and first black woman to receive the honor.

In 2010, Scurry sustained a traumatic brain injury that left her temporarily disabled. Because of this, she experienced severe depression and received occipital nerve surgery in 2013. Drawing strength from her challenges, she has become a passionate advocate for concussion awareness, athlete health, and mental wellness.

Briana Scurry remains active in the soccer community through coaching, broadcasting, and acting as general manager. In 2022, she released her best-selling memoir, My Greatest Save and was the subject of The Only, a CBS feature-length documentary highlighting her life also released in 2022
