Stanley Cup Champion | Former Boston Bruins Defenseman

Andrew Ference is a Stanley Cup champion, former NHL captain, sustainability leader, and community builder whose career has moved from the highest levels of professional sport to the front lines of social impact and environmental change. Over 16 seasons in the National Hockey League, Andrew played 907 regular-season games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins, and Edmonton Oilers. He won the Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins in 2011, later captained his hometown Edmonton Oilers, and was named one of the 100 most legendary players in Boston Bruins franchise history.

Known throughout hockey for combining toughness with curiosity, conviction, and purpose, Andrew has built a second career around using sport as a platform for progress. He helped create the NHL Players’ Association Carbon Neutral Challenge, encouraging hundreds of players to offset the environmental impact of team travel, and later joined the National Hockey League as its first Director of Social Impact, Growth and Fan Development. Today, he continues to lead sustainability and social impact initiatives connected to the NHL, helping the League, clubs, players, and partners turn environmental responsibility and community engagement into practical action.

Andrew’s work has earned recognition far beyond the rink. He received the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, awarded to the NHL player who best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community. He has also been awarded Queen Elizabeth II Diamond and Platinum Jubilee Medals for community service. To deepen the substance behind his environmental advocacy, Andrew studied Corporate Sustainability and Innovation through Harvard Extension School, bringing formal training to a lifelong commitment to climate action, systems thinking, and better business practices.

As a speaker, Andrew brings an uncommon mix of elite-performance experience, practical leadership lessons, and grounded environmental perspective. He speaks with the directness of a teammate and the curiosity of a lifelong learner, drawing connections between locker-room culture, personal accountability, community trust, and the real-world decisions organizations make every day. His stories are as comfortable in a boardroom as they are in an arena: what it takes to build a championship team, how leaders earn credibility, why culture is shaped by small repeated choices, and how purpose becomes more powerful when it is tied to action.

Off the stage, Andrew is a hands-on maker and outdoorsman who raises chickens, gardens, sews, coaches, and keeps learning by doing. That part of his life gives his message a practical, human edge: leadership is not a title, sustainability is not a slogan, and meaningful change is built through craft, discipline, humility, and the willingness to get your hands dirty. For corporate audiences looking for a speaker who can connect high performance, values-based leadership, sustainability, and authentic community impact, Andrew Ference delivers a compelling story with lessons people can actually use.
