Andrew Ference is a Stanley Cup champion, former NHL captain, sustainability leader and community builder whose career has taken him from the highest levels of professional hockey to the forefront of environmental and social impact. Over 16 NHL seasons, he played 907 regular-season games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers.
Ference won the Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2011, later captained his hometown Oilers and was named one of the 100 most legendary players in Bruins history. His leadership and community service earned him the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, awarded to the NHL player who best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice while making a noteworthy humanitarian contribution. He has also received Queen Elizabeth II Diamond and Platinum Jubilee Medals for his service to the community.
Known throughout hockey for combining toughness with curiosity, conviction and purpose, Ference helped create the NHL Players’ Association Carbon Neutral Challenge, encouraging players to offset the environmental impact of team travel. He later joined the NHL as its first Director of Social Impact, Growth and Fan Development and continues to lead sustainability and social impact initiatives connected to the league. To deepen the substance behind his advocacy, he studied Corporate Sustainability and Innovation through Harvard Extension School.
